Discover Scuba Resort Course

image8

Discover the wonders of the underwater world with us. This course allows you to dive with one of our experienced instructors without being fully certified. The course begins with a short class and shallow water orientation at our dive shop. Afterwards, you will dive with your instructor on one dive from the shore and one from the boat (option 2). If your time is limited or you just want to try diving in Cozumel, this is the course for you!

And, the best news is, if you return to Dive with Martin within 12 months of your course, your Discover Scuba course will count toward one of your Open Water Certification dives. This will reduce the cost of your full Open Water certification by $25.

Course Options and Overview

The Discover Scuba Diver course consists of three parts:

Part 1:First, the instructor briefs students on breathing rules and equalization techniques, equipment purpose and use, hand signals, regulator and mask clearing techniques and responsible interactions with aquatic life. The instructor will also strongly emphasize the importance of watching and staying close to the instructor and the limitations of the program.
It is vitally important that all students understand precisely what will happen when in the water, what to do in the event of a problem, and that the DSD is an experience program, not a training course with certification. With that in mind, each participant must complete and sign the Discover Scuba Diving Knowledge and Safety Review.

Part 2:The second step is to progress to the shallow water near the dive shop. Students learn how their gear works and practice BCD inflation and deflation at the surface. Next, they’ll learn the correct breathing technique and practice blowing some bubbles. Once they are comfortable beneath the surface, the instructor will demonstrate and assess key safety skills. The instructor must ensure that students are able to successfully complete the following skills prior to moving to an open-water setting with a depth of up to 40 feet (12 m):

  • Breathing underwater
  • Regulator clearing
  • Regulator recovery
  • Mask clearing
  • Equalization techniques

Part 3:Finally, having successfully completed the skills, the instructor and students will complete a 35 - 40 minute dive from the shore. This will be no deeper than 25 feet and they will have the chance to explore coral mounds with all sorts of fish life. If the student has chosen Option 2 (below), after a 30 - 45 minute break, they will get on one of our boats and go out to one of the shallow reefs nearby to do a second dive from the boat. After getting in the water and getting comfortable, they will descend on the reef (no deeper than 40 feet) and have second 35 - 45 minute dive under the close supervision of their instructor.
